The Hidden Cards: Poker and Information

Strategy in poker relies on mental and emotional manipulating, due in large part to the fact that players act on incomplete information. This is part of the power and fun in poker, as your opponents could easily be lying about their cards with the way they are betting. This secrecy is in fact enforced in poker through the rules as revealing your cards is considered bad etiquette, a breach of the rules and taboo until you absolutely have to, which is only require by the rules during a showdown. During the showdown, which isn't even a guarantee, face down cards are revealed and compared in order to decide who gets the pot.

Cards remain hidden except for the showdown - even if a player is giving up their spot by folding, their cards could and actually should remain hidden. This often happens in high level poker excursions as a great number of players win most hands through severely timed bluffs. In those tournaments, where winning is largely because there's only one player left, most hands are never revealed. While it is of course possible to reveal your face down cards after the fact, revealing it during a game is an extremely rude if questionable move.

Revealing information before it is due or when a round is ongoing could even be considered cheating as the other players in the game figure out which cards are no longer available to them. This is, of course, an extremely advantageous position to be in as knowledge easily translates into chips and money.

Poker strategy suggests that proper decision making is a big part to true and consistent victory. Information regarding their opponents and the cards they possess in any hand leads to more correct and accurate decisions. Generally, the more you've got on them, the better your play will be. This is the heart of all true poker strategy - knowing your opponents perhaps better than you truly know yourself and employing poker strategy than can take full advantage of that knowledge.

The cards are a huge part of any round or hand of poker but it cannot be stressed enough that the people are just as important when it comes down the line.
